Vegetables
Are you always told to eat your vegetables at home? Some people don't like a lot of vegetables, but there are so many different types that there must be one (or twenty!) that you like.
Vegetables are full of nutrients and vitamins, things that your body needs to grow healthy and strong.
Many vegetables, like lettuce and spinach, are the leaf part of the plant. These green parts have a lot of vitamins and nutrients.
Other vegetables, like carrots and turnips, are the root parts of the plant.

Flowers
Flowers are everywhere. A lot of times, people will buy seeds to grow their own flowers in the yard.
- Flowers have a lot of bright colors. This is how they attract bees to pollinate them.
- Flowers can grow in a lot of climates and there are hundreds of types.
- Flower seeds are small and are at the top of the plant.
Trees
Trees come in many different sizes and shapes. They need to be different for different climates. A palm tree that lives in Florida looks a lot different than a pine tree from Lexington!
- Trees have a main trunk and branches that come off of the trunk.
- At the end of the branches, trees have leaves.
- These leaves normally fall down in the autumn so that the tree can be safe during the winter. Then the tree will grow new leaves in the spring.
- Some trees, like cherry and apple trees, have flowers at the end of the branches.
Bushes
Bushes look like just the branches of trees. You probably have some bushes around where you live, as they are common around houses.
- Bushes are smaller than trees, but bigger than flowers.
- At the bottom of bushes, there are more than one trunk going into the ground.
- Sometimes bushes need to be pruned (cut shorter) so that they do not grow too tall.
- Some bushes, especially in hot areas, have flowers at the end of the branches.
Cacti
Normally, you would see a cactus in the desert. Sometimes they can be bought in small pots to keep by a window.
- Cacti (which means more than one cactus) do not need water because they hold water in their body.
- Cacti, like other plants, have flowers so that the bees and animals will help pollinate it.
- There are sharp spines on the outsides of cacti so that animals will not try to eat them.
